We all watched as Dune Part Two stunned our screens and took the world by storm. After the first film, I became very interested in Frank Herbert's Dune and the world Director Denis Villeneuve and Costume Designer Jacqueline West were so rapidly building into a visual masterpiece.
By the release of the second film and walking out of the IMAX my heart was set on recreating a look from the film. Originally enraptured by Lady Jessica's draped designs and delicate beadwork, I too was quite surprised by the stillsuit I had made and was about to wear for the first time.
dune Part two: Stillsuit
may 2024
Inspired by my previous sustainable work on The People Before and 'Stitch, Please!' I sourced all the materials (except from the foam) from my local charity shops and a few household items that were destined to be thrown away. Unless the project truly requires it, I do not believe that for a project like this Stillsuit-that it should be made from fresh fabric. Four pairs of demin and canvas jeans were used to create the majority of the base suit and then painted and distressed to match.
Using Alyson Tabbitha's Stillsuit Pattern and Tutorial as my guide to rapidly make this costume in time for its debut at MCM May Comic-Con was incredibly handy along with SKS Props tutorial for his Crysknife and Half Mask.
This costume was actually one of the the biggest surprises for me as I really worried about the outcome not looking authentic and it not suiting me-which plays a major part in my confidence whilst wearing it. I loved every second of it-making it, wearing it, seeing the results-its all been so rewarding. This costume got me back into the workshop making again and getting my creativity flowing again. All of the process was filmed and I will update this page with more details when the youtube video is out.
